About Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

If you have particularly severe symptoms or have tried other treatments like wrist splints and steroid injections but still cannot function normally, you may be advised to have carpal tunnel release surgery.
Carpal tunnel release surgery, also known as carpal tunnel decompression, is a surgical procedure that involves removing the carpal ligament. This ligament connects bones in your wrist to form the carpal tunnel, which runs through your hand and contains several tendons and your median nerve, which controls movement and feeling in your hand. Your median nerve gets compressed in carpal tunnel syndrome, usually resulting in tingling, numbness or pain in your hand. The pressure inside your carpal tunnel is relieved by dividing the carpal ligament.

Carpal tunnel release surgery is performed under local anaesthetic and usually spans between 0.5 to 1 hour. Typically, there are two main types of Carpal tunnel release surgeries.

Open surgery: This entails a cut near the bottom of your palm by your surgeon. A split will be made on your carpal ligament with a special knife, allowing for greater carpal tunnel width and decreasing pressure on your median nerve. Then stitches will be put in your skin, and a bandage will be wrapped around your hand.

Keyhole surgery: In this procedure one or two tiny incisions (or “portals”) will be made in your skin near to the carpal tunnel. Then a small camera will be inserted and additional little tools to perform the procedure and your carpal ligament will be cut into your hand and wrist. This ensures that the top layer of skin and tissue above the carpal tunnel is protected.

During your first appointment at our clinic, Mr Ammar Allouni will clarify all your questions regarding the procedure. He will recommend surgery only if it is the best option for you. You will also be encouraged to clarify any doubts regarding the recovery period, post-surgical care and the expected outcomes.

He will take your detailed medical history and conduct relevant clinical assessments, which might be followed by a 3D projection of the expected result – if surgery is indicated in your case. Additionally, he will inform you of the potential risks and complications of the surgery.

Some of your medications might require adjustments prior to the surgery or additional drugs may be prescribed. You will be asked to discontinue drugs like aspirin and herbal medications (if any) for a few days before and after the procedure.

Mr Ammar Allouni will also inform you about certain precautions to be taken before and after surgery. He will instruct you to quit smoking and to avoid consuming alcohol and recreational drugs for a few days before and after the surgery.

  • Pre-Surgical Care: After your full body assessment and before your surgery day you get the list of precautionary measures – what all you should avoid and what all you should do for the best results.

  • Day of Surgery: Mr Allouni follows the BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) guidelines for all cosmetic procedures. On the day of surgery, your health status will be reassessed thoroughly and a qualified nurse will prepare you for the procedure. Mr Ammar Allouni and his team will ensure your well-being and comfort throughout the procedure.

  • Post-Surgical Care: Mr Allouni and his team will be at your side while you are recovering. Once you are ready to go home you will be receiving a proper guideline of dos and don’ts that you need to follow and instructions on how often you need to be in touch with your surgeon to share your recovery status.

  • Follow up Stage – FREE: You will be provided with a schedule about your follow up appointments. All your follow-ups with your surgeon will be completely free.

  • Personalised Care: Once you have gone through your surgery, you can always directly contact with Mr Ammar Allouni and his team in case you face any issue or concern in future.
Your hand might be tender for the first day or two following the cut. This should go away, but you could feel discomfort or soreness in your hand for several weeks. After the operation, you will have full power back in your hands between 6 and 12 weeks later. You need to take minimum 2 weeks off from your work.
After surgery, it takes time for your hand’s gripping and strength to return. It might take up to a year to fully recover. By the end of the first year after surgery, you should be receiving all of the advantages. The good news is that this problem is very easy to cure. The potential risks of Carpal tunnel release surgery include infection, bleeding, tender and sensitive scar and nerve damage in the wrist.
