If you are dissatisfied with your tattoo and have tried laser tattoo removal without success may opt for tattoo excision. Surgical tattoo removal is only effective on smaller tattoos and not on larger tattoos covering several areas of the body.

The medical procedure of tattoo removal begins with the precise marking of the tattoo on the skin, followed by the administration of local anaesthetic through and surrounding the tattoo. The tattoo is removed surgically, and it is possible to remove small tattoos in one sitting. For bigger tattoos, it may be recommended for follow up treatment to remove the remainder of the tattoo. After the tattoo has been removed, the wound edges are reconnected and closed with stitches. Sometimes non-dissolvable sutures are used in certain situations because they provide a better scar cosmesis. In some cases, a skin graft may be done to conceal the damage caused by the tattoo removal.

Once you are ready to go home you will be receiving a proper guideline of dos and don’ts that you need to follow and instructions on how often you need to be in touch with your surgeon to share your recovery status.

Post surgery, your skin may be red with rashes which will subside gradually. Also, avoid sun exposure as your skin will be sensitive after the tattoo excision surgery. For smaller tattoos you may return to virtually all activities straight away. For bigger tattoos you need to limit your arm or leg movement for the first 5 to 7 days to allow the wound to heal without causing problems.

You may expect to see your final results after a few weeks of multiple sessions. The number of removal treatments you will require depends entirely on the type and size of your tattoo.
